General Tips

Circulation of the water is the first of the 5 Steps to pool care. Without proper circulation your pool will be difficult to maintain and you will never achieve the best possible water quality.

Good circulation will ensure the proper distribution of water throughout the pool. Watch out for dead spots, areas of poor circulation - corners or behind pool steps for example, and take care of these when brushing or vacuuming.

For the other key steps, use the following 5 steps

STEP ONE-Circulation

Run your filter pump for a minimum of 8-hours a day, 7-days a week, the longer you run your pump the better the water quality you will achieve.

Ensure the inlets that return the filtered water to the pool are pointing down towards the floor at an angle of 30% to _45%°. Inlets pointed toward the surface create a nice ripple effect but are not good for circulation.

Keep your pump and skimmer strainer baskets free of debris by regular checks and emptying and cleaning as required.

Backwash your filter once a week, as the filter the pressure within the tank builds up and flow collects debris diminishes. Backwashing the filter will remove the debris collected in the sand and as a consequence improve the circulation

STEP TWO-Filtration

The second key to good pool water management is effective filtration. The job of the filter is to remove large and small suspended matter from the water and without an efficient filtration system no amount of chemicals will make the water sparkle

There are three types of filter used on residential swimming pools - diatomaceous earth, cartridge and sand; by far the most common type used is sand. Sand filters come in different sizes and your filter will have been selected to suit the size of your pool. Typically your pump and filter combination will have been sized to give a pool water turnover period of 6-8 hours, which is why you should run your pump for a minimum of 8 hours per day, 7 days per week.

Specially graded silica sand is the media used to fill your filter and although this will last for years it will become dirty due to grease deposits, which the weekly backwash will not remove. The other thing that can impair the effectiveness of your sand filter is calcium deposits that bind the sand together effectively turning it into sandstone.
Backwash your filter once a week to remove the debris that has been become lodged within the sand bed.

STEP THREE-Cleaning

Brushing the walls and floor, vacuuming the floor and removing debris from the water surface are all necessary parts of pool maintenance, but these tasks need not be arduous and if done weekly should only take a few minutes.

Cleaning around the pool's waterline is another task that can be achieved very quickly when done regularly. The waterline is the area where grease deposits can accumulate, which in turn makes debris stick to the walls. This debris provides a source of food for bacteria and algae to grow in. Regular cleaning off the Wall will prevent these problems.

Although out of sight the other thing that should be chemically cleaned at least once a season is your filter media.

When cleaning the pool do not just look at the pool tank itself; consider the areas around the pool as well. If there is debris surrounding the pool it will be washed into the water by rain or walked in by bathers making their way in for a swim.

Keep your pump and skimmer strainer baskets free of debris by regular checks and emptying and cleaning as required.

STEP FOUR-Testing

Regularly testing your pool water is vital to ensure that the water is safe for bathers to use. In an ideal world pool water would be tested on a daily basis and certainly if you are a new pool owner we would recommend this.  As a guide testing disinfectant and pH levels twice a week when the pool is being used is an absolute minimum requirement.

Water testing can take as little as a minute using the our Test Strips.
Our Test Strips is a quick and easy way to test your pool water, these test strips will check for free chlorine, pH and total alkalinity. Simply dip a strip into your pool water, remove immediately, wait 15 seconds and compare the colour pads on the strip with the standards printed on the bottle.

Your pool water should always be sparkling; clear and comfortable to bathe in, do not settle for anything less.  To achieve this there are a number of water tests that should be carried out on a monthly basis.

We offer a full water analysis service free of charge to our pool owning customers and we would highly recommend that you take full advantage of this valuable service.

The best way to avoid problems is to test your pool water a minimum of twice a week, react to the readings you get and adjust chemical levels as necessary

We at Clearpools firmly believe that prevention of problems is far better than having to repeatedly solve them. This is time consuming and costly not to mention inconvenient to those who want to use the pool.

Safety

Safety should always be a top priority both in the pool and around the poolside. Allow us to give you important information to make certain that chemicals are handled correctly. Make sure you read all our advice to ensure a safely equipped swimming pool.

Dispose of empty chemical containers after rinsing them out in the pool.

Do not use electrical appliances near the pool.
